Thomas Smith (b. c. 1725, d. 1790) worked in London and was a student of, assistant to, and successor to Peter Wamsley. Smith later became the court appointed luthier for King George III and the Duke of York. Smith’s cellos are particularly sought after, and his choice of wood is exceptional, often favoring local maple with narrow flames. This cello is English, from the early 1800’s and very much in the style of Thomas Smith. It produces a luxurious warm sound with an even response across the strings. The low end resonates with a deep richness that transitions to a colorful, sweet upper register. The varnish is a handsome deep brown that complements the velvety tone creating a distinguished presentation. This cello would be a wonderful companion for the exceptional player.
