Leopole Widhalm (b. 1722 d. 1776) was one of the most important 18th century German violin makers. He studied under  Sebastien Schelle and took over this workshop after Schelle’s death.  Widhalm’s  workshop grew into the largest and most successful violin shop in Nuremberg. His work shows the influence of  Jacob Stainer.  In fact this violin was once thought to be by Jacob Stainer due to the workmanship being so exacting and the style so refined. This instrument is in wonderful condition. It produces a powerful and resonant sound capable of easily filling a performance hall. The instrument is varnished a beautiful golden-brown color, and the flames on its two piece back are breathtaking.  This instrument would support an exceptional Early Performance violinist.
