Arthur Richard Bultitude (b. 1908, d. 1990) embarked on his apprenticeship at the firm of W. E. Hill & Sons in 1922 at the tender age of 14. He studied with William Retford, one of the foremost Hill makers of that time, and reaped a wealth of knowledge of bow restoration and making techniques from his mentor. Bultitude’s bows made for Hill are marked with number 6 on the tip under the bow hair.

Bultitude worked in an aircraft factory during WWII, returned to work for Hill for an additional 16 years, and then left to start his own workshop in Kent. His bow making style evolved from the Tourte model as he built bows to suit a particular customer requirement. Bultitude was regarded as a true gentleman who’s work was acknowledged with an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire).  This particular Arthur Bultitude bow represents the highest level of his work.
