George Wulme-Hudson (b. 1862, d. 1952, United Kingdom) was a trained jeweller, studied violin at the Guildhall School of Music, and then made violins with some mentoring from Thomas Jacques Holder. W-H became quite active making violins from 1897, crafting over 800 instruments, additionally he worked with Edward Wither’s prominent London shop. He is considered one of the most important early 20th century British luthiers. Additionally, W-H was earned the moniker “the second John Lott” based on his world-class ability to execute copies of Stradivari, Bergonzi, Guadagnini, and Guarneri models. Further, W-H added the name “Wulme” to distinguish himself from a contemporary violin maker of lesser skills also named George Hudson. The intrigue continues as many of W-H’s violins were labeled with names of fictional Italian makers. Givens Violins is thrilled to offer his violin using the soubriquet “Caressa” followed by G. W-H 1924, Fecit London inscribed on the label.
The violin has a sumptous, broad, golden, and powerful voice with pure rounded overtones. W-H’s violin is mature and is even across all registers. A visually rich instrument enveloped with a medium brown over gold varnish, you will find the violin to be a fantastic instrument for orchestral and chamber playing. Come and play this delightful surprise!
