February 15, 2018 by

Join us on Saturday February 17th with notable Baroque violinist and violist, Sarah Darling, at Givens Violins 1201 Marquette Avenue, 2-4 PM.

When we first met Sarah Darling at the Boston  Early Music Festival, her enthusiasm for all the arts of music was unmistakable. Her baroque repertoire was informed with all the pathos and joy of the original works and her classical playing spoke of a passionate knowledge of the context and history of the great composers. You can imagine our pleasure when we found out last month that she would be in St Paul, MN performing with the SPCO this week.

Sarah knows our special interest in baroque and classical performance practice and offered to host a special event at Givens Violins / Dipper Restorations in Minneapolis. You can play for her and she will be available to discuss technique or try out Early instruments and bows. Just drop by when you can. There will be a selection of baroque instruments, both antique and new, plus baroque and classical bows to try. Andrew has promised to provide English tea and biscuits.

BIOGRAPHY:

Described as “a tireless force of musical curiosity, skill, and enthusiasm” (Boston Musical Intelligencer), Sarah Darling enjoys a varied musical career that spans many centuries, styles, and roles. Equally at home on viola and baroque violin, she enjoys “translating” between the early and modern worlds. Sarah performs as a member of A Far Cry, Musicians of the Old Post Road, Boston Baroque, Emmanuel Music, the Boston Early Music Festival, Les Bostonades, Gut Reaction, Musical Offering, Antico Moderno, Newton Baroque, Sarasa, the Carmel Bach Festival, and the Boston Ballet Orchestra.

She studied at Harvard, Juilliard, Amsterdam, Freiburg, and New England Conservatory, working with James Dunham, Karen Tuttle, Wolfram Christ, Nobuko Imai, and Kim Kashkashian. She has recorded old and new music for Linn, Paladino, Azica, MSR, Centaur Records, plus a solo album on Naxos and a Grammy-nominated CD on Crier Records.

Sarah is active as a teacher and coach, with a special interest in body mechanics and musical rhetoric, and serves as co-director of the Harvard Baroque Chamber Orchestra. Praised for “absolute concentration and astonishing precision” (Badischer Zeitung), and “sympathy and spirit” (Hub Review) she’s also been dubbed “the one to up the ante.” (Intelligencer) Sarah regularly shares her thoughts on music at her blog, Listening Deliberately. www.listeningdeliberately.com.
