Dealers, Makers & Restorers of Fine Violins, Violas, Cellos & Bows
the fine art of restoring, conserving, and building historic musical instruments
Lee Guthrie has a most colorful biography! He started as a land surveyor and civil engineering technician who started playing old time fiddle in 1974 leading to an interest in violins. Like all of us, he needed to get a bow rehaired and subsequently was so fascinated by the process that he wanted to know how he could be trained entering the bow restoring business himself. Guthrie attended the string instrument repair course in Red Wing, MN in 1978-79 and did periodic repair work on violins and bows while keeping active in surveying. In 1990, Guthrie studied with bow maker William Salchow and the rest is good news for string players. He started making bows as a career and continues his education by annual visits to the Oberlin College Makers workshop. Guthrie bows are made with the finest materials, visually gorgeous, have excellent playing qualities, and are in the hands of some of world’s most eminent soloists and orchestral players.
Would you like more moxie in your playing? Answer: the Guthrie bow. By playing this bow, you just know Guthrie is made with a passion for you, the player.
