Charles Brugere, Paris 1921
The Maker:
Charles Brugere (b. 1865, d. 1930, Mirecourt) was the son of a guitar maker. He began his violin making vocation as an apprentice of Etienne Drouin (1878), in Mirecourt, with whom his stayed until 1882. Brugere then successively joined Paul Blanchard in Lyon, P. Bailly in Paris and in 1885, Gand & Bernardel in Paris. In 1892, Brugere managed the business of Eugene Henry for three years before founding his own Paris workshop in 1895 and employing three associates. Notwithstanding retirement in 1920, he actively continued restoration work. At the 1900 Paris Universal exhibition, Brugere was decorated with a silver medal and then elevated his status with a gold medal win at the 1905 Liege Universal Exhibition.

His violins are inspired mainly by the Stradivari and Amati models.
