16 1/2″ Natale Carletti, Pieve di Cento 1967 w/cert
The Maker:
Natale Carletti (b. 1904, d. 1979) was the son, student, and business successor of father Carlo Carletti in Pievo di Cento, Italy. Natale Carletti inherited his father’s workshop I 1941. A cellist himself, Natale produced 200 cellos, however, most importantly for your 16 ½” viola, his best work was produced from 1945-68. He was assisted by his brother, Nallo, in the workshop and adopted the Carletti tradition of crafting instruments following the Cremonese Stradivari “San Lorenzo” violin. Natale is acclaimed for his high-order workmanship as evidenced by garnering multiple gold and silver medals during his tenure.
Appearance:
Let’s begin with the viola’s remarkable physical appearance. Your eye will be drawn to the profound medium flames on the ribs and the unique two piece back with alluring broad irregular flames ascending from the back centerline.
Sound & Feel:
Select your best bow (or one of ours!) and play. The Carletti promptly speaks with an authoritative and complex voice that says “This is what a viola should be.” This tonally colorful, lustrous, and reliable voice will capture attention and deliver a fulfilling performance of the most demanding viola repertoire. For a larger viola, the Carletti is easeful and delightful to play. Dreams do come true!
