The Makers:

David Polstein is a contemporary luthier working  in Newton, Massachusetts. He began learning violinmaking in Portland, Maine with luthier Jonathan Cooper, before moving to Boston to attend the violin making program at the North Bennet Street School. After graduating, he worked for a few years with the maker Arthur Toman, before opening his  shop in Newton. Since then, he has won numerous awards for his instruments.

Appearance:

This 16.5” viola, made by Polstein in 1999, is a beautiful example of his work. With a handsome one-piece maple back and double purfling, this viola is as striking in appearance as it is in sound.

Sound & Feel:

It has a lush, deep low end and a soaring upper register, with clarity of tone and ease of response across all four strings.
