Cello: Vincenzo Postiglione, Napoli, 1890 w/cert
The Maker:
Born in Napoli in 1831, Vincenzo Postiglione apprenticed with his father, Vincenzo Jorio until 1852. He was then commissioned to look after the large and valuable collection of an amateur player which allowed him to study the great makers’ instruments closely. Much of his inspiration for his own work comes from that of the Cremonses makers Stradivari and Guarneri combined with the Neapolitan tradition of Nicolo Gagliano. This combination of knowledge and the establishment of his own workshop in Napoli in 1855 are what would lead Postiglione to become the founder of the modern trend of the Neapolitan school. His cellos are of especially high-quality and are prized for their careful craftsmanship and highly refined sound. The business passed to his sons in 1910 and Vincenzo Postiglione passed away in 1916.
Appearance:
This cello is particularly striking and has a beautiful, caramel-colored varnish with a fine craqueleur giving it a distinguished look.
Sound & Feel:
With a responsive, rich sound this cello is an exceptional example of Postiglione’s work. The upper strings sing with a brilliant sweetness that transitions to a lower end with power and depth of sound. There is no lacking of power or color in this cello. Perfect for the professional player.
