The Maker:
This bow was made in the style of John Dodd.
Known as “English Tourte”, John Dodd (b. 1754, d. 1839) began his career as a metalworker before turning to bow making. He is widely regarded as the greatest English bow maker prior to James Tubbs. Dodd’s bows are admired for their exceptional craftsmanship and excellent quality of Pernambuco wood. Although many of his bows were slightly shorter than the standard length, they are highly valued for their playing qualities.
Unlike most bow makers using heat to bend the stick, Dodd employed a distinctive technique that he used double saws to cut the bow’s curvature directly from a plank of Pernambuco. This unusual method set his work apart and contributed to the unique character of his bows.
