The Maker:

Johannes Siegfried Finkel (b. 1947) was born in Markneukirchen, Germany, in 1947, into a family deeply connected with the tradition of fine bow making. The son of Siegfried Finkel and Hanna Weidhaas, daughter of Paul Weidhaas, who had studied in workshops of prominent bow makers such as Bausch and Fétique before founding his own workshop in Markneukirchen.

In 1952, his family relocated from Markneukirchen to Switzerland, where Johannes was introduced to the craft under the instruction of his father. Seeking broader experience beyond his family workshop, Johannes spent several years developing his skills internationally. Between 1968 and 1970, he worked at the distinguished London firm J. & A. Beare, where he gained valuable insight into the world of fine bows, restoration, and the international violin trade. He later moved to the United States, joining the workshops of Hans Weisshaar in Los Angeles and William Moennig & Son in Philadelphia, further expanding his expertise and exposure to different approaches in bow making and restoration.

Johannes returned to Switzerland in 1974, bringing with him new ideas, technical knowledge, and a wider professional network. After his father’s retirement in 1984, he assumed responsibility for the family workshop in Schwanden/Brienz. Under his direction, the workshop continued to uphold the high standards of the Weidhaas-Finkel tradition, while Johannes established himself as one of the leading bow makers of his generation.

Throughout his career, Johannes Finkel was recognized for his refined workmanship, knowledge of historical bows, and commitment to both new bow making and restoration. He retired in 2013, leaving behind a significant contribution to modern bow making. His legacy continues through his daughter, Daniela Finkel (b. 1987), who represents the fifth generation of the family and continues the tradition of the Weidhaas-Finkel workshop.
