Viola Bow: W. E. Hill & Sons, “H & S” S/E, Sydney Yeoman
The Maker:
Sydney Yeoman (b. 1876, d. 1948) was one of the important makers who worked for W.E. Hill & Sons. He joined the Hill firm in 1885, initially working on the production of violin cases before turning his attention to bow making under the guidance of William Napier. His career was interrupted by the First World War, when he volunteered for service in 1914. Despite difficulties resulting from his service, he remained an influential member of the Hill workshop and, by 1930, was entrusted with supervising and guiding less experienced bow makers. A highly productive craftsman, Yeoman produced bows that are valued today for their distinctive character, workmanship, and playing qualities.
