Violin: Oscar C. Meinel, Markneukirchen 1936
The Makers:
This violin was made by the E. H. Roth company which was founded by the famous Ernst Heinrich Roth (1877-1948) in Markneukirchen, Germany. The firm was one of the preeminent companies in Germany making significant numbers of high-quality instruments and bows during 1920-1940. It was said that Mr. Roth would try all the instruments and bows before sending them out to make sure all the his instruments were of a high standard. “Oscar C. Meinel” is one of Roth’s trade names which he used to supply retail sellers mostly in the U.S. market.
Appearance:
The top is made of spruce with fine, even grain at the center that gradually broadens toward the edges. The back is crafted from one-piece of maple with a broad, well-defined flame. The instrument is varnished in a deep red-brown color over a golden ground.
Sound & Feel:
The violin offers bold projection with a sweet, bright tone and speaks with clarity across all strings. The upper register is lyrical and singing, while the lower register is full, rich, and sonorous, creating a well-balanced and expressive tonal palette.
