the fine art of restoring, conserving, and building historic musical instruments
Natale Novelli (b. 1908 Milano, d. 1981Codogno) was the nephew and student of violin maker Giuseppe Pedrazzini during his early training in Milan. Upon Pedrazzini’s death in 1957, Novelli established himself in Codogno with a workshop of his own. Instruments made before Pedrazzini’s death are regarded as Novelli’s best work. The Novelli instruments were based on the Cremonese model and the personal model of his mentor. Novelli is distinctly noted for his exacting workmanship, lovely finishes, and restorations. The 1950 viola offered by Claire Givens is quite stunning with a two-piece back emblazoned with vibrant narrow flames. Playing the 15 ¼” Novelli viola is sublime as you think you are playing and hearing a much larger viola, AND your left hand is traveling so easily over the strings and double stops. It has never been more effortless! Ahhh! Back to reality, you are playing a smaller viola sporting a warm, opulent, and expressive personality with just a tinge of brilliance. This viola is a fabulous opportunity for a professional violist, collector, passionate violist, or violinist wanting a super comfortable historically significant viola (with a certificate issued by Michel Samson) and the lifelong gift of enjoying this remarkable instrument.
