Dealers, Makers & Restorers of Fine Violins, Violas, Cellos & Bows
The Maker:
Originally from England, Michael Gene Scoggins (b.1954,d. 2008) was a master luthier based in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he co-founded Scoggins & Scoggins Violin Shop with his former wife and fellow master luthier, Carrie Scoggins. He also was a teacher with the Violin Making School of America (VMSA) in Salt Lake City. He was a pioneer in the use of native grown American wood for his fine violins, violas and cellos, preferring to source particularly from Oregon and Washington State.
Appearance:
This 16″ viola is an excellent representation of masterful quality of work Michael produced. The instrument flaunts a beautiful deep red varnish on its belly and slab-cut back.
Sound & Feel:
It produces immense clarity and precision across the entire instrument. The lower register rings with depth and richness, and the upper register projects well and easily. This instrument is a treat to play and would be perfect for an advanced or professional violist.
