The Makers:

Mathias Hornsteiner (b. 1760, d. 1808) hailed from a large family of violin makers in Mittenwald, Germany in the 18^th and 19^th centuries.  Nicknamed “Dax,” Mathias emerged as the most celebrated and accomplished member of the family with his elegant workmanship and finely textured tonal qualities characteristic of his violins and violas.

Appearance:

Varnished in dark red-brown over gold ground, this violin has narrow flamed, two-piece maple back with ribs and scroll matched the back.

Sound & Feel:

The sound is warm, rich, and intimate.  The violin responds with ease and flexibility across the strings and at varying dynamics.
