Maker:

Thomas Tubbs (b.1790, d.1863 London) was the first of four generations of Tubbs bow makers in London, the grandfather of James Tubbs.  He was a pupil of either Edward or James Dodd and established independently in 1823 at 44 Princes Street, Leicester Square.  He made fine bows clearly inspired by the French bows of the time.  He made many of the bows for workshops such as Dodd.  This bow represents an early work with the “open-trench” frog and the rounded heel.  It is in remarkably fine condition with all aspects of the beautiful head absolutely intact.  This is a rare all-original Classical violin bow. 

 

Model:

The use of the classical bow with an open hair channel in the frog was still in use at the Paris Conservatoire and in Vienna long after its general use had been superseded by the modern bow.
