The Makers:
Mathias Hornsteiner (b. 1760, d. 1808) hailed from a large family of violin makers in Mittenwald, Germany in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nicknamed “Dax,” Mathias emerged as the most celebrated and accomplished member of the family with his elegant workmanship and finely textured tonal qualities characteristic of his violins and violas.
Appearance:
Varnished in dark red-brown over gold ground, this violin has narrow flamed, two-piece maple back with ribs and scroll matched the back.
Sound & Feel:
The sound is warm, rich, and intimate. The violin responds with ease and flexibility across the strings and at varying dynamics.
