The Maker:

Adolf Schuster (1890–1947) was among Germany’s most respected twentieth-century bow makers. Early in his career, he developed a deep appreciation for the French bow-making tradition, devoting himself to the study of the works of François Tourte, Nicolas Voirin, and James Tubbs. He completed his apprenticeship in the workshop of W.A. Pfretzschner, where he remained until the outbreak of the First World War.

After the war and suffering the loss of an eye, Schuster returned to Markneukirchen in 1918. Despite the challenges of the postwar years, he established his own workshop, which was really successful, employing distinguished craftsmen such as Otto Adler and Otto Paulus. His bows were branded “ADOLF C. SCHUSTER” and are additionally identified by the firm’s heraldic bird and company name stamped on the frog.
