The Maker:
The name Albert Nürnberger represents one of the most respected legacies in German bow making. Founded by Franz Albert Nürnberger I (1826–1894) in Markneukirchen, the tradition was rooted in the old German bow-making school through his father and teacher, Karl Gottlob, a pupil of F. C. Knopf. Franz Albert I was also a founding member and longtime chairman of the Markneukirchen Bow Makers’ Guild.
The workshop achieved international recognition under his son, Franz Albert Nürnberger II (1854–1931), who established his own workshop around 1880. Considered one of the greatest German bow makers, he created the distinctive Nürnberger Tourte-style bow, which gained worldwide acclaim. His bows were favored by renowned violinists including Eugène Ysaÿe, Jan Kubelík, Fritz Kreisler, and David Oistrakh, who regarded them among the finest bows of their time.
The Nürnberger family tradition continued through later generations, including Carl Albert, Philip Paul, Karl Albert, and Christian Albert Nürnberger. Throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries, the family workshop produced exceptional bows with the stamp “Albert Nürnberger”.
