The Maker:
Prosper Colas (b. 1842, d. 1919) was a French bow maker active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There aren’t many information about his early years, but is widely thought that he was born in Coincourt and apprenticed locally before moving to Paris around 1871, where he is believed to have worked for the workshop of J.B. Vuillaume. He later established his own workshop, which became particularly productive around the turn of the century and employed several skilled craftsmen. His work reflects the French bow-making tradition, drawing clear influence from makers such as Bazin and Vuillaume. Colas bows are valued today for their solid craftsmanship, balanced handling, and consistent playing performance.
Sound & Feel:
This bow is well balanced and immediately comfortable in the hand, offering an easy, natural response across all playing styles. It draws a warm, centered tone with a solid core, combining richness with clarity.
