The Makers:
Joseph Bonnel ‘Le Vieux’ (b. 1800–1870) was a French violin maker and dealer in 19th century. He established his shop in Rennes, France and later with his sons, Joseph (‘le Jeune’) and Émile, joined the workshop. Instruments made by the family were highly regarded and typically made in the Lupot or Stradivari styles.
Appearance:
Though the Bonnel family were known for their style in Lupot and Stradivari, this particular violin was made in Guarneri model, and probably one of the first Guarneri copies at the time. It showcase the color and the state of preservation of the varnish, and the essence of the pegbox on the Guarneri violin from that period.
It features a deep red-brown varnish over a golden ground with antiqued finish. The top is of finely grained spruce, while the two-piece back is made of medium-figured flamed maple, with the ribs and scroll are matched to the back.
Sound & Feel:
This violin has a warm, refined and colorful sound and a very quick response.

Belly: Spruce, Two-Piece
Back: Maple, Two-Piece
