Dealers, Makers & Restorers of Fine Violins, Violas, Cellos & Bows
the fine art of restoring, conserving, and building historic musical instruments
Leo Aschauer was formally trained in the Mittenwald Violin Making School becoming its Director in 1923 for the next 37 years. He worked for both Wilfer (Berlin), and Gartner (Stuttgart) in 1911. He also worked in the well-known Gustave August Ficker shop in Mittenwald. This violin is from the workshop of Leo Aschauer, based on a Guadagnini violin as stated on its label, and is a fine example of Mittenwald work. The violin has a gorgeous deep red varnish, with subtle flaming across a one-piece back. It produces a very bold sound, both on the lower register and the upper range, plus responds immediately making it very easy to play. This violin would be perfect in the hands of the advancing student looking to expand their presence and expressiveness.
