Dealers, Makers & Restorers of Fine Violins, Violas, Cellos & Bows
the fine art of restoring, conserving, and building historic musical instruments
The Wunderlich family dynasty of luthiers worked in Markneukirchen and local regions during the 19th and 20th centuries making a plethora of fine violins and bows. Claire Givens Violins is offering a gorgeous violin bow made by family member Gustav Wunderlich (b. 1872 Luby/Schonbach, Czech Republic, d. 1937 Leipzig, Germany). He was a pupil of Karl Kohler in Schonbach. From 1897 on, Gustav worked in Berlin and then established his own shop in Leipzig where he was regarded as a master bow maker. In fact, Wunderlich patented his own bow design in 1926! He also has a claim to fame for making the smallest instruments in the world marketing them as curiosities and souvenirs. We have come to expect the finest workmanship from German bows and, indeed, your highest expectations will be satisfied with the Wunderlich bow. Firstly, the bow is dressed with splendid rose gold trimmings and gold wire grip. Take the bow into your hand and note the organic connection to enhance your ability for pulling a smoother, sustained sound. Now the fun begins! The weight of the bow allows the hair to melt and wrap around the strings in a secure, intimate hug. With ease, you will draw deep, robust, and resonant notes from the violin. Any bowing technique you ask from the bow will provide instant gratification. Come treat yourself!
