Gaetano Gadda, Mantua c.1950
The Maker:
Born in Sorgà near Mantua, Gaetano Gadda (1900-1956) is widely regard as the only true pupil of master maker Stefano Scarampella.
After entering Stefano Scarampella’s workshop in 1919, Gaetano quickly became indispensable. As Scarampella’s health declined in the early 1920s, Gaetano assumed increasing responsibility for the workshop’s daily operations and was likely involved in the production of many instruments sold under Scarampella’s name. In 1924, the two reached an agreement whereby Scarampella transferred all his tools and molds to Gaetano in exchange for the completion of one violin per month for him, which just last for a year with Scarampella passed away in 1925.
Gaetano’s early output (1919–1935) was heavily influenced by Scarampella, with many instruments closely following his master’s models and working methods. As his career progressed, he gradually established his own identity, producing instruments of greater refinement and tonal focus. By the 1940s, he had begun incorporating elements inspired by masters like Guarneri del Gesù and Tommaso Balestrieri, and his postwar instruments represent the peak of his craftsmanship, combining maturity of design, technical precision, and exceptional acoustic qualities.
Appearance:
Labeled “STEFANO SCARAMPELLA de Brescia/ Premiato con Medaglie d’Argento fratello ed allievo del Giuseppe fece in Mantova”, this violin is in a very good state of preservation and shows the typical Mantuan tradition.
