The Maker:

John Norwood Lee is widely regarded as one of America’s foremost contemporary bow makers. Lee’s introduction to the violin trade began during his high school years in Chicago, when he assisted violin maker Manfred Reinl by fabricating specialized tools for violin making. In 1977, he began an apprenticeship at the renowned Chicago firm Bein & Fushi, initially training in violin restoration under Bill Webster. Although color blindness limited his ability to perform varnish retouching, this unexpected challenge redirected his career toward bow restoration and ultimately bow making.

While at Bein & Fushi, he restored and studied many of the world’s finest historical bows, gaining invaluable firsthand experience with masterpieces by François Xavier Tourte, Dominique Peccatte, Eugène Sartory, and other celebrated makers. Encouraged by the firm, he began making his own bows later that same year, producing a series of commissioned bows that laid the foundation for his distinguished career.

Over the years, Lee established an international reputation for crafting exceptional bows that combine traditional French models with outstanding playability and craftsmanship. His faithful interpretations of Tourte, Peccatte, and Sartory are especially prized for their technical precision, elegant workmanship, and musical performance. His work is trusted by leading musicians worldwide and is especially admired for its refined balance, responsiveness, and tonal versatility.

We’re pleased to offer this very special bow, his #583, copied from a Louis Simon Pajeot at Bein & Fushi during that time.  His “Comet” inlay in the frog is distinctive and elegant.
