Dealers, Makers & Restorers of Fine Violins, Violas, Cellos & Bows
the fine art of restoring, conserving, and building historic musical instruments
John Stagg (b. 1954) hails from Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England. The son of a draughtsman, Stagg completed an engineering degree at Durham University. After university, he elected to build wooden racing boats for two years before landing at W.E Hill & Sons in 1977. During his tenure at Hill & Sons, he rose to the position of Senior Bowmaker having worked and studied with Brian Alvey and other Hill colleagues. Stagg’s Hill bows bore the number 20. In 1983, Stagg left Hill, worked at other shops before establishing his own shop in Bristol (1991). Stagg also made bows for the Machold firm in Bremen branded “Machold Bremen-J.W.S.” He is celebrated as one of the world’s foremost bowmakers as attested by many professional musicians who prize the Stagg bows for reliability and strength. Take the bow into your hand and you know immediately there is something special about the bow. The weight, the balance, the comfort, and the appearance will fuel your enthusiasm to play the bow. Stagg’s superior quality bow, dare we say, has unparalleled control from tip to frog. The bow embraces the strings easily and you will delight in the robust, glowing, and smooth-as -silk sound.
If you want strong projection, consistency in bowing technique, and unflappable performance, the Stagg was made for you.
