Hartmut Knoll (b. 1937) learned the craft of bow making between 1953 and 1955 at his father’s firm (Alfred Knoll) in Oberprex, Germany. Hartmut completed his apprenticeship in 1955 and continued to work in the Knoll family business with ten other bowmakers. Under the auspices of the HWK Nuremburg, Knoll completed the master’s exam in 1966. Ever the consummate professional, Hartmut assumed direction of the family business in 1977, supervising the quality control of the bows made, and continues to make bows himself. Indeed, he was awarded the gold medal for bow making at a national competition in 1983. Hartmut’s bows are oriented to a personal model similar to a pattern used by his father, Alfred Knoll. The two stamped stars indicate the bow is adorned with 8K gold, very lovely.
The Knoll is a real pleasure to play. The bow pulls a swift, immaculate response from any string with fabulous balance. We really are excited about the superb level of control throughout the length of the bow to facilitate more complex strokes such as spiccato and ricochet. Your violin (and you!) deserves the Knoll bow!
