Violin Bow: (Johann) W. Knopf , Dresden s/e c. 1900
Johann Wilhelm Knopf (b. 1835, d. 1912) was a shining 3rd generation star of the Knopf family of exceptional bowmakers. He was the illegitimate son of C.W. Knopf, Jr. In spite of this tarnished beginning, Wilhelm trained with his uncle, Christian Friedrich. After opening his Dresden workshop in 1884, JW enjoyed an excellent reputation as bowmaker and set workmanship and design milestones in German bowmaking. Life turned out quite well for J. W. Knopf and speaks to his strength as a person. His bows reflect his indestructible and brave character. Brave indeed! The bow fits well into the hand and is guided with easeful precision for tackling the most demanding of repertoire. You will be delighted with the warm, large, and radiant sound characteristic gifting you with a marvelous musical experience. Oh yes, the bow is stunning to look at.
