The Maker:

Johann Christoph Nürnberger (b. 1839, d. 1899) was a German bow maker whose work remains relatively little documented compared with other prominent makers of the same surname. He was not a member of the renowned Albert Nürnberger bow making family of Markneukirchen, but was an independent maker.

From 1865 to 1870, Nürnberger worked for five years in the workshop of the celebrated French violin maker and dealer J. B. Vuillaume in Paris, gaining valuable experience within one of the most influential ateliers of the nineteenth century.

Only limited biographical information survives about Johann Christoph Nürnberger, but his bows demonstrate the influence of the French school combined with the German bow making tradition. His bows are typically stamped “C. H. Nürnberger” (or “CH Nürnberger”). In some cases, he also stamped the name and city of the musician who commissioned the bow, providing a rare personal connection between maker and player.
