Violin Bow: K. Gerhard Penzel, S/E, pern
The Maker:
The Penzel family has been among the most respected names in German bow making for more than a century. The family’s legacy began with Emil Max Penzel (1886–1953), who founded his workshop in Erlbach in 1907 after completing his training with the distinguished makers August Pfretzschner and H. R. Pfretzschner. His bows earned a reputation for their fine craftsmanship and helped establish the Penzel name within the German bow making tradition.
Gerhard Penzel (b. 1929, d. 2017) learned the craft under the guidance of his great-uncle, Emil Max Penzel, and his father, Kurt Walter Penzel, also a respected bow maker. In 1948, he moved to Stuttgart to work with Karl Mages, and opened his own workshop in 1953. After earning his Master Craftsman qualification in 1956, he later relocating it to Ostrach in 1974. His bows are renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship and use of aged Pernambuco wood.
